[ARCHIVED] IRS Scam

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens about a scam involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). There are scammers calling people and impersonating the IRS. The impersonators tell the victims that they are with the IRS and that they have not paid their taxes. In order to prevent the victims from getting a federal warrant for their arrest or go to jail, they tell the victims to go get a green dot money order and pay them now.

Citizens should know that the IRS will not contact you by phone to solicit funds by green dot money orders over the phone. The IRS has a website to report these impersonations; www.treasury.gov/tigta.

If you have any questions on this or if these subjects call, do not give them money and contact your local law enforcement agency.
