[ARCHIVED] Jury Duty Scam

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens about a scam involving Cole County Jury Duty. There are scammers calling people and telling them their name is Deputy James Marshall from the Cole County Sheriff’s Department. Marshall is informing them that they have missed jury duty in April and Judge Joyce has issued two warrants for them; one for missing jury duty and the other for contempt of court. They are instructing people to go get 2 Green Dot cards, $500 each, and then they are to bring those to the courthouse, 1st floor, room A, on a particular date.

Marshall then asks for their cell phone numbers so they can keep in direct contact. If anyone gives him their cell phone number, Marshall will call them later and tell them he can’t make it to court. He will ask them to just give him the numbers from the Green Dot cards to him and he will take care of the warrants. If the victims tell him they are not giving him their cell phone number, he hangs up.

If you have any questions on this or if these subjects call, do not give them money and contact your local law enforcement agency.
