As school ends and summer starts, the Cole County Sheriff's Office will be initiating increased DWI enforcement. This is in conjunction with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration under its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
The Sheriff's Office was awarded traffic grants to fund DWI focused enforcement and Hazardous Moving Violations from mid-April through July. Grant funds cover personnel, fuel and supplies.
The total number of Missouri traffic deaths had declined to 766 in 2014, one of the lowest rates since the 1950s. Unfortunately, fatalities increased during 2015 and 2016 and an increase of just one fatality is too many.
"Our goal for this traffic enforcement period is for people to comply with the law and be safe, rather than just enforcing of the law and make arrests. We want everyone to enjoy the end of the school year, enjoy their summer, and not have to suffer the loss of a loved one. We ask that you be smart and do not drive impaired," said Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler.
