Epidemiology is the study of factors determining disease in a population. It is also defined as the study of the distribution and determinants of disease and other conditions in populations before, during and after preventive and other interventions. It is population-based and describes health-related phenomena through measurements of disease and its determinants and distribution in a given population.

An epidemiologist is someone who initiates and maintains systems for the collection and analysis of data, designs disease surveillance systems, evaluates trends, determines disease baselines, initiates and coordinates epidemiologic investigations and studies and recommends actions related to data trends.
